Painting is a fundamental branch of fine arts, the essence of which is to use line and colour on a plane. Painting is the most sensitive record of personality, an art with the greatest potential for discovery – it also performs the most diverse functions among all artistic disciplines. Painting is the most complete document of man’s spiritual transformation, his attitude to religion, science, nature and tradition. In terms of tendencies, painting is divided into figurative and abstract. As far as colouring is concerned, we distinguish polychromatic and monochromatic painting. Painting can also be divided in terms of technique, such as oil, watercolour, gouache, tempera, pastels, mosaic, stained glass, etc. A painting is the result of a combination of many factors – some determine the form of action, others its material structure. Technological possibilities are enormous and forms of expression innumerable, because the multitude of techniques together with technological development allows to achieve almost unlimited diversity. Painting is, in a way, at the roots of the whole spectrum of visual activities, it is like a laboratory where new ideas are created and experiments are transferred to new disciplines of human activity. Art is inherently constructive. The revolution, on the other hand, presupposes a breakdown of balance. Whoever governs a revolution, deludes, creating temporary chaos. Well, art is the opposite of chaos. It does not plunge into chaos without an immediate sense of threat both to its actions and to its very existence. The main goal is to equip students with such knowledge and skills.
