First-cycle full-time course in Graphic Arts

A graduate of this course has knowledge of artistic graphics, as well as design graphics. The offer of the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk combines these two paths, enabling the profession of a graphic designer to be fulfilled in the commercial field and on the independent path of an artist-creator. First-cycle studies equip students the ability to use various artistic means. Conscious, independent thinking and acting, which is based on theoretical knowledge of culture and art and knowledge of traditional and modern working techniques, is the main goal of young graphic designer’s education.

The studies allow to acquire basic skills and knowledge (basics of graphic design, basics of artistic graphics, basics of photography, basics of multimedia technologies, basics of interactive graphics, drawing and painting, history of art) in order to focus on selected issues during the final semesters – the students have the possibility to choose from six artistic graphics studios and seven design studios. In this way it is possible for them to have a real influence on their own development according to their interests, temperament and artistic preferences. Each studio comes with a different lecturer, a different range of problems and issues raised.

To sum up, the knowledge and skills acquired allow the graduate to use both traditional means of expression (i.e. to create unique prints on the graphic press, do drawing or painting work) and to function on the commercial market (design a poster, packaging, do typesetting, cover and illustrations for a book, take analogue and digital photographs, create an animation, video clip or another short multimedia form).

 

The subjects that are taught in the course include:

  • Artistic Graphics: Linocut, Serigraphy, Lithography, Intaglio Printing, Animation and Visual Actions, Digital Techniques;
  • Graphic Design: Design for Culture, Poster and Advertising Forms Design, Social Propaganda, Graphic Signal in Public Space, Introduction to Book Design, Photography, Illustration;
  • Drawing and Painting, Lettering and Typography, Computer Workshop and Digital Tools, Basics of Multimedia Technology, Basics of Interactive Graphics;
  • History of Art, History of Graphics, Artwork Analysis, Copyright.

EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS:

Graduates can find jobs in: printing, publishing and photography industry; in design offices, advertising agencies, promotion offices, consulting companies; design offices belonging to clothing companies; public cultural institutions, departments of public institutions related to culture, promotion, visual communication, galleries and museums. Many graduates decide to establish independent businesses, providing consulting and design services, as well as creating and selling their own artistic works.

After the first semester of studies, certain number of students will be able to choose the Animation specialisation.

First-cycle full-time course in Graphic Arts – Animation specialisation

Animation, i.e. mobile graphics, has become one of the most important means of artistic and commercial expression today: film, television, the Internet, mobile billboards, computer games, applications and visualisations have become an inseparable element of our everyday life.

The Animation specialisation at the Faculty of Graphic Arts will enable us to learn in depth the basic techniques of manual and digital animation. First-cycle studies, based on a proven traditional techniques of artistic and design graphics, will prepare for new tasks those who wish to create based on movement, time and rhythm using the latest digital tools.

The scope of the studies covers:

> basics and principles of film animation experienced in practice,

> understanding and interpretation of movement and rhythm in film form,

> scenography preparation (in cooperation with graphic design studios) and creation of projects and animation models,

> animation techniques and basic tools (manual and digital),

> principles of film language,

> building a story and film narration,

> composition of frames, shots and film sequences.

The student takes a number of subjects dedicated to the Animation specialisation (Basics of Animation, Animation Techniques, Film Language, History of Film and Animated Film), and the obligatory range of subjects provided for first-cycle Graphic Arts students. The curriculum allows students to acquire basic skills (basics of graphic design, basics of artistic graphics, basics of photography, drawing and painting, history of art) in order to focus on selected issues during the final semesters – the student has the opportunity to choose an art and design studio where he prepares his diploma thesis. In this way it is possible for the students to have a real influence on their own development according to their interests, temperament and artistic preferences.

To sum up, the knowledge and skills gained allow the graduate of the first-cycle studies with the Animation specialisation to use both traditional means of expression (i.e. to create unique prints on the graphic press, do drawing or painting work) and to function on the commercial market (design a poster, packaging, do typesetting, cover and illustrations for a book, take analogue and digital photographs, animation, video). Above all, however, the aim of education at the Animation specialisation is to form the basis of knowledge, skills and artistic awareness, which will allow graduates to become independent film makers, using a variety of animation tools and techniques and visualisation activities.

EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS:

Graduates of the speciality will be able to work in the production of films, commercials, television programmes, computer games and all kinds of multimedia productions.

Moreover, graduates will be prepared to work in: printing, publishing and photography industries; in design offices, advertising agencies, promotion offices, consulting companies; clothing companies; public cultural institutions, departments of public institutions related to culture, promotion, visual communication, galleries and museums. Many graduates decide to establish independent businesses, providing consulting and design services, as well as creating and selling their own artistic works.

Second-cycle full-time course in Graphic Arts – Graphic Design specialisation

A graduate of the Graphic Design course with this specialisation has knowledge related particularly to graphic design in many areas and disciplines. He has advanced and well-established knowledge of art history and aesthetics, including contemporary issues; he has advanced knowledge of theory and practice in graphic design, including: typography, designing books, magazines, posters, visual identity. He is familiar with the internal structure of photographic matter and understands the autonomy of photography as a separate art discipline, and has basic knowledge and awareness of the use of photographic means of expression. He is prepared to function independently on the market as a designer.

The studies are a continuation of artistic education, focusing on aspects related to graphic design. During the first two semesters the student also attends classes in artistic graphics. The principle of choosing a studio and thus defining one's own development path, known from the first-cycle studies, is maintained.

To sum up, the acquired knowledge and skills constitute a solid foundation for the graduate of second-cycle studies with the Graphic Design specialisation to enter the professional market, according to the chosen specialisations and disciplines. A graduate has the ability to prepare materials for a social or promotional campaign or series of photographs, prepare and assemble a multimedia work, including stop-motion animation, can design and illustrate a publishing cycle, design a series of packagings, develop a project to improve visual communication or a comprehensive visual identity.

Second-cycle full-time course in Graphic Arts – Artistic Graphics specialisation

A graduate of Graphic Arts with this specialisation has specialised knowledge and skills in artistic graphics. He has advanced and well-established knowledge of art history and aesthetics, including contemporary issues; he has advanced knowledge of the theory and practice of concave, convex, flat and screen printing; he knows and is able to predict the effects that can be achieved by these graphic techniques. He has gained general artistic knowledge of drawing and painting, he is familiar with issues related to artistic photography. He has the ability to recognize and use the mutual relations between different styles, technologies and artistic conventions to create original, personal artistic statements.

The studies are a continuation of artistic education, focusing on the search for an individual path in artistic graphics. During the first two semesters the student also attends classes in graphic design. The principle of choosing a studio and thus defining one's own path of development, known from the first degree studies, is maintained.

The acquired knowledge and skills constitute a solid foundation for the entrance of the graduates into the art market, according to the chosen specialisations and disciplines. Moreover, the knowledge and competences gained in the design studio enable them to perform tasks related to the commercial market. The graduate has the ability to prepare advanced works in a graphic design studio, combine graphic techniques, draw or paint, prepare a series of artistic photographs, or a multimedia work, including stop-motion animation.

First-cycle part-time course in Graphic Arts

First-cycle part-time studies in the field of Graphic Arts are conducted with particular emphasis on graphic design.

Graduates of this course have knowledge related to graphic design in many areas and disciplines. In accordance with the legal requirements, the part-time programme includes no less than 60% of the full-time programme. Thanks to this, the graduate has a well-established knowledge of the history of art and graphics, as well as knowledge of technologies and possibilities resulting from various graphic techniques and digital design tools. Moreover, the graduate acquires knowledge of the photographic matter and has basic knowledge and awareness of the use of photographic means of expression. He acquires basic knowledge of media phenomena, basics of digital animation, basics of digital edition. He is prepared to provide services in the field of graphic design.

To sum up, the obtained learning outcomes allow a graduate of first-cycle part-time studies to efficiently use both traditional means of expression (i.e. to create unique prints on graphic press, to do drawing or painting work) and to function on the commercial market (design a poster, sign, logo, packaging, website; prepare an animation, graphic design and composition of a book, take analogue and digital photographs, create a video or another short multimedia form).

Second-cycle part-time course in Graphic Arts

First-cycle part-time studies in the field of Graphic Arts are conducted with particular emphasis on graphic design.

In accordance with the legal requirements, the part-time programme includes no less than 60% of the full-time programme.

A graduate of this course has knowledge related to graphic design in many areas and disciplines. He has advanced and well-established knowledge of design and creation: photography, illustration, editorial graphics and typography, visual identification, UX/UI design, packaging design and competences necessary to conduct various types of experiments in the field of visual design (defined as open design during the educational process). Additionally, the graduate has appropriate knowledge of copyright law, the methods of solving design problems based on Design Thinking, design history and media theory. The competences in the field of fine arts are enhanced by knowledge of and experience in painting, drawing and screen printing.

The studies are a continuation of artistic education, focusing on aspects related to graphic design and creation. They provide an innovative space to deepen the knowledge and experience gained during first-cycle design studies or professional work on the market. They develop the need for in-depth knowledge of conscious handling of visual communication.
