Title: Silence in the city. Revitalisation of the Far Way granaries at the Water Market in Gdańsk.
Silence, which expresses itself in the need for distance from everyday life, desire for spiritual experience, peace necessary to know oneself, slumbers in each of us. Each
Each of us can find it in a different way, but in order to experience it, a suitable place is necessary. The project is a protest against commercialisation and the exclusion of the spiritual needs of people in cities. At the same time it emphasises the qualities resulting from in-depth research and sensitivity to the places where investments are planned. The Space of Silence is located on the northern tip of Granary Island in Gdańsk, one of the most economically valuable areas of the city. Introducing such an object in this place raises the question of what could be valuable for Gdańsk, its inhabitants and people visiting this one of the most interesting Polish cities.
Do architectural objects necessarily have to serve one specific purpose, or is it not better to build spaces that stimulate higher human needs. Freeing an object from one specific function allows it to use its potential for other purposes. The specifics of the chosen site are strongly taken into account in the design. First of all, the fact that the headland of Granary Island forms one of the frontages of Water Square in the city centre. The shape of the object refers to the historical Far Way granaries, which were located in this place.
