Faculty of Graphic Arts

About the Faculty

The offer of the Faculty of Graphic Arts combines knowledge in artistic (workshop) graphics and graphic projects opening up satisfactory careers as a commercial graphic artist or an individual author. Conscious independent thinking and acting based on theoretical knowledge in the field of culture and art, as well as mastery of traditional and modern work techniques are a priority among our educational objectives.

Students of Animation are taught the basic manual and digital animation techniques. We work based on well-established traditional techniques of graphic arts and graphic design, offering new opportunities to those who wish to create using modern digital tools, based on movement, time and rhythm.

Since its very establishment, the Faculty of Graphic Arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk is characterized by a certain dichotomy. Formally, such terms as “graphic art” and “graphic design” are used with reference to it; in the practical and ideational dimension, on the other hand, it encompasses education in the vast fields of creative activity – from “hard”, vector design of typographic layouts, to socially engaged graphic art and tricks of the trade of animation, to traditional graphic techniques, such as metal techniques, linoleum print, lithography, serigraphy, and many more. The Faculty of Graphic Arts is a meeting place of diverse design perspectives and artistic creations. Its characteristic dualism allows at the same time to uphold the traditional, canonical values inscribed into this field of art as well as to constantly redefine one’s attitude towards the changing world. Among the graduates of our faculty there are both graphic artists as well as designers oriented towards more exact, technical, and functional sciences. The diversity of our offer allows the students to conduct numerous experiments, investigations, and searches for their own means of expression in various disciplines. Already during studies, young graphic artists participate in numerous exhibitions and symposiums, including international ones, such as the prestigious 7th Tidaholm Lithographic Symposium in Sweden (2015). Under the supervision of pedagogues, they also take part in projects realized at the commission of institutions and external partners. As the vast range of directions of creative development is complemented by elements of traditional academic education, our graduates are versatile designer artists.
